It is something that is quite old in the Linux community but be advised that linux kernels 2.6.17 to 2.6.24.1 are vulnerable to a local root exploit. I still see a lot of servers that are vulnerable.

At this time it is recommended that you upgrade your kernel to the latest version available for your distribution or you compile a 2.6.24.2 or above version.

Don’t ignore this as it can be a major security issue.
